During exam/ deadline season sometimes we don’t prioritise self-care as much as we should. It can be easy to separate mental and physical health as they seem like two, separate entities. However, they are more connected than you might think, with one affecting the other in numerous ways.

Lots of scientific studies have found a strong link between mental health and physical health. A person’s mental state significantly influences their physical well-being and vice versa.

Today we will be talking about how this manifests to show you how important it is to maintain the two so you can feel your best.

The link between mental and physical health

This topic has many layers. Mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and stress contribute to numerous physical health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and obesity.

Mental distress can cause hormonal imbalances, which can negatively affect the immune system. This can lead to an increased risk of infections and other not-so-pleasant diseases. Some people with mental health issues can struggle with self-care and may engage in behaviours that harm their physical health. For instance, a person with depression may have difficulty maintaining a healthy diet or getting enough exercise, leading to an increased risk of obesity and other health problems.

Chronic stress and anxiety can also contribute to the development of chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia, migraines, and chronic headaches. These physical conditions can lead to a vicious cycle of physical stress and emotional distress that can be really difficult to get out of.

Addressing mental health issues

Addressing mental health concerns can, therefore, have a significant impact on a person’s physical health and overall well-being. If you’re struggling, seeking help for mental health conditions can help you manage symptoms, reduce stress, and improve your quality of life.

Not to worry though, as therapy, medications, and lifestyle changes such as exercise and mindfulness practices are just some of the options available to help people cope with mental health conditions, leading to better physical outcomes and happier people.

In conclusion, mental health and physical health are interconnected, with one influencing the other in numerous ways. This may sound daunting but none of this is made to scare you. We wanted to highlight how important it is to look after yourself in this manner, and why it is important to prioritise mental health just as much as physical health. The two together lead to happier healthier individuals, making it easier for you to write that essay you’ve been putting off.
