With summer finally arriving for us all, there are plenty of things you can do to really get yourselves in a summery mood. One thing that always works for me is watching films that encapsulate all the fun, freedom, and sunny drama brought about by the summer months! In that spirit, this article is going to go into a list of movie suggestions to really get you feeling those summer vibes!

Mamma Mia (2008)

This beautiful musical film starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried takes the glory of a summer wedding on a Greek island, and mixes it with a drama of family discovery, and love blossoming in different generations. This whirlwind film takes you through the emotional story with all the best songs of ABBA throughout, and it’s honestly one of the best films to watch in the summertime with a jug of Pimm’s nearby! It’s also the perfect film to watch with friends, and you can all sing along to the tunes together!

Call Me By Your Name (2018)

This vibrant romance film set in the glorious Italian summer follows Elio and Oliver as they explore their feelings for each other, amidst the rural setting of northern Italy in the early 1980’s. This queer journey intermingles with their differing ways of life, comparing the life of studying and history with literature and music, and showing how two different serene thinkers come together and bond with their minds and bodies. It’s a film with its ups and downs with all sorts of conflicting relationships, and in my view it’s the perfect kind of film to add to your summer watch list!

Pride & Prejudice (2005)

This version of Pride & Prejudice is my personal favourite adaptation of Austen’s novel of the same name. This film follows the Bennett family, in particular the independent and passionate Elizabeth Bennett, as they traverse the difficulties of trying to find suitable marriages amidst the clashes of classes. The tests and tribulations within the relationship of Elizabeth Bennett and the imperceptible Mr Darcy easily keep you hooked, and the rural romances really make it a perfect watch during the summer!

Sense and Sensibility (1996)

This adaptation of yet another fantastic Jane Austen novel follows the Dashwood sisters as they have to move from their home upon the death of their father, and upon finding themselves in a much simpler rural home they must navigate their new situation, and the romances and conflicts that come into their lives. This story offers differing views on feelings and relationships, comparing practical thinking with poetic inclination as Elinor and Marianne in particular come to discover what they want for their lives. This is a freeing film, one definitely well-suited for watching in the summer!

La La Land (2016)

This wonderful musical film starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling displays the lives of a struggling actress and an (equally struggling) jazz musician as they intertwine, sing and dance their way through trying to achieve their hopes and dreams. This film displays the realistic problems people face when they ache to make a success in the arts, along with the sacrifices they have to make to keep a hold of the success they get when they have it. This film’s vibrancy and intensely emotional storyline, with its rawness of characters, is truly a perfect film to watch to really get yourself in a summer holiday mood!

I genuinely recommend these films, because I personally have watched and enjoyed every single one of them, and they really help you feel like summer is well and truly here! With that said, I wish everyone a happy summer!
