Always staying safe, whether you are walking home with a friend, or getting a taxi alone is very important.
Calling a friend
If I ever walk home alone after a night out, I always call a friend and give them updates on where I am and roughly how long I shall take to arrive home.
This makes me feel safer as I feel less alone and safer in the knowledge that my whereabouts, despite being alone, are still known to someone I trust.
I do the same if I am in a taxi also so I can have more reassurance that my location is known to people I trust.
Turning on your location
I make use of ‘Find my friends’ and ‘SnapMaps’ with my friends if I know they are walking home alone, or if they are aware I am doing the same.
This allows the people you trust to see your location know where you are and therefore how close to home you are.
Strut safe are a free organisation who offer a telephone service whereby anyone who does not feel safe walking home can call whilst they walk home.
This service aims to be non-judgemental and supportive to anyone who needs it.
The number is 0333 335 0026.
I have this number saved in my phone in case I find myself walking home one day and an uncomfortable situation arises, and a trusted friend is unavailable to call.
Having this number in my phone provides me with the comfort that there is always someone available to call if I am in need of support to make me feel safer.
Using a taxi company you trust
Depending upon the length of my journey home, I sometimes make use of taxi companies, I have always found the company ‘Handsome Cabs’ to be reliable with friendly drivers.
Whilst I trust the company, this still means I follow the steps above of making a friend aware of my location and the fact I have booked a taxi to put my mind at ease.
