Best of: How to be more sustainable

It’s difficult to know where to start with living sustainably, especially if it’s your first time living independently, we have collected all our best advice to help you be sustainable and save money while doing so!

Living in a very plastic-filled world, finding alternatives and avoiding plastic use can be pretty tricky – Sophie

“Probably the most talked about is the use of straws. Whilst swapping out the types of straw you use won’t single-handedly combat climate change, it will go a step towards making change. Instead of picking up plastic straws, try sourcing reusable ones made out of stainless steel or glass. These are reusable and often come with a small brush to make cleaning even easier.”

Entering the world of slow and second-hand fashion can be daunting but remember that you don’t have to be a perfect eco-warrior! – Katie

“eBay, Vinted and Depop are the best places to find more specific second-hand items in my experience. Use a variety of keywords as sellers may not use the same descriptors as you when listing items. You are also able to search for branded or shop-specific items with greater ease.”

Reducing plastic pollution and helping keep our streets, oceans and communities clean is key – Emily Bowes

“The university has many waste collection facilities across campus. The following types of waste, or ‘streams’, are collected:

  • Paper
  • Dry mix recycling
  • Glass
  • General waste
  • Battery
  • WEEE
  • Hazardous waste”

If you’re not sure where to start, there are a tonne of swaps you can do! – Kirsty

“It’s easy to find plastic and metal reusable water bottles, but did you also know that you can get plant-based and bamboo water bottles, and coffee cups made of recycled coffee cups? Not only are they reusable, they are also much better for the environment.”
