As someone who has recently started to follow a vegetarian diet and cares deeply about the environment I was excited to learn about Earth Day! Earth Day falls on the 22nd of April annually.

This day aims to help people to better understand, protect, and improve the environment.

The day is also dedicated to advocacy, education about food and agriculture, recycling and much more!

I like that there is a day that promotes all these things as it is so easy to feel helpless and overwhelmed with the climate crisis and the environment, however it is nice to know there is a day specifically to bring light to such important issues which sometimes gets overlooked!

How to make an impact on Earth Day

Growing up, my primary school would always plant trees on Earth Day, however, smaller gestures will still have a positive impact!

For instance, I pledged to turn off lights and other unnecessary electricity consuming appliances this year, and it is a small way I choose to help the environment.

I also enjoy watching nature documentaries about penguins with my housemates on Disney+ to feel more educated and connected to the animals which are being affected by climate change in order to encourage me to keep up the habit of turning lights off!

As I am new to vegetarianism I am still discovering new recipes to follow. This Earth Day I shall be looking up more to maintain this new environmentally friendly lifestyle.

Earth Day could be a great way for all of us to reflect on how we could all live more sustainably.

The University has an ECO society which concerns itself with environmental and conservation issues in a positive way – perhaps Earth Day could be the perfect time to join to engage and debate important issues with like-minded people if these concerns are important to you!

What is the purpose of Earth Day?

The purpose is to support the range of green initiatives in which people involve themselves in!

Having an Earth Day also revives public commitment to the cause and promotes global activism in the name of the environment!

Earth Day honours the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the need to protect Earth’s natural resources.
