How to save money on travel

Travel can be expensive, especially for students travelling home for the holidays or on days out with friends. However, these tips will help you save money and travel for cheaper while you’re a student at the University of Lincoln.

Choose public transport

One of the easiest ways to save money on travel is by using public transport. Why? Save on petrol. Save on parking. Save on taxi fares.

Public transport can be the easiest way to get to where you want to be, and it’s often the cheapest (if you use my tips!) In Lincoln, public transport, whether it be buses or trains, is cheaper than the taxi alternative. This will help you save some money.

Also, public transport is often the most environmentally friendly option, reducing the use of cars. So, it’s a win-win!

Get a 16-25 Railcard

If you choose the use a train to get where you need to be, getting a railcard is a great option. The 16-25 Railcard gives you 1/3 off every train ticket you buy. For one year it’s £30 and for three years it’s £70, so it’s definitely worth it in the long run.

You can even get a free railcard if you have a Santander Student Bank Account. I have one of these railcards, and it has been a great money saver for me, reducing the price of every train journey I have taken since starting university.

A train from Lincoln to London Kings Cross will usually set you back around £32, but with a railcard that drops to under £22. A £10 saving! That soon adds up and makes your railcard more than worth it.

Plan ahead

It’s always worth planning your journey in advance. Not only does it make things easier for you, when going home or coming back to uni, it can save you some money too.

Train tickets are more expensive when you buy them at the station or on the train itself. Buying your tickets on the Trainline app before you travel will mean you get the cheapest price.

For long journeys, like travelling down to London or up to Edinburgh, the prices tend to get more expensive closer to the day. So, organising your travel and buying tickets in advance can save you a few quid to spend on your day out.

Stagecoach Bus Fare Cap

If you aren’t using the train, don’t worry! There are also cheap ways to use buses in and around Lincoln. Stagecoach has a £2 cap on all their fares, meaning you can get a one-way ticket to anywhere on the Stagecoach lines for £2 or under.

If you want a day out at the seaside you can! £2 gets you to Skegness. Another £2 to get back, and that means you can pay for all your travel under a fiver.

The Lincoln Central Bus Station is a hub of public transport in the city, just across the round from the train station and a couple minutes from the High Street and the university campus. The bus station is a great place to get around Lincoln and Lincolnshire.

If you follow these few tips you will be able to save money on travelling in, out and around Lincoln.
