City Breaks for Students, Manchester Edition

Summer is the perfect time to get away for a cheap city break, whether by yourself or with friends, and explore a new city. With fairly cheap train tickets from Lincoln Central, make sure to add exploring this Northern city to your bucket list!

With over 100,000 students in Greater Manchester, there are always tons of student offers going on, along with many themed student nights. Whether you enjoy drinking or not the Northern Quarter is focused around the Thomas Street and High Street crossroads. This area is densely packed with entertainment, nightlife and hospitality and is extremely popular with students. Boasting many student deals like free entry or discounts on food and drink. Some venue recommendations include Soup Kitchen, The Mint Lounge, Flok and Behind Closed Doors.

Another good night in Manchester is at the The Deaf Institute. An independent bar and venue based just off Oxford Road. It regularly hosts comedy nights, live gigs and club nights. Along with three bars and a kitchen this is a great place to discover new music and have a boogie with your friends!

Manchester is a fantastic area to shop. If you’re looking for high street stores the Arndale centre is a great place to start. With everything in one place it’ll save you some walking time trailing around your shopping bags, whilst also being inside it’s great for all kinds of weather. If you’re more into second hand and vintage shopping Manchester boasts a huge collection, concentrated in the Northern Quarter and you’re guaranteed to find something unique.

A visit to Afflecks Palace is a Manchester staple. Described as ‘an emporium of eclecticism, a totem of indie commerce’, the indoor market harbours an incredible range of independent and unique shops. It’s definitely an experience you shouldn’t pass up.

If you’re looking for something a little more educational the Manchester art gallery is a great place to go for a little peace and quiet from the bustling city. With free entry this is perfect for students and contains a wide range of art that will hold your attention for hours.

If you’re stopping for a few days, a day trip to the Peak District should be on your to-do list. With stunning views it’s the perfect place to get your hiking boots on and get out with a picnic. There’s trails to follow and different heights to climb to so you can do what you’re comfortable with, it’s accessible for everyone.
