Spending Christmas away from home

As an international student, it will be my second Christmas away from home and if you find yourself in a similar situation, know that there are still plenty of things you can do to prevent feeling lonely! Here’s your guide to making the most out of this magical time:

1. Get in touch with people who are also staying on campus during Christmas!

There are various places where you meet them and I highly recommend checking the following:

  • You can contact Student Wellbeing or Student Support Centre if you would like to meet a community of students who are in the same situation as you. They have created a closed Facebook group for students who would like to support themselves during this time.
  • If you’re an international student, you can also join the International Student Support Facebook Group designed specifically for students from all over the world.
  • Join a great app – Umii – where you can connect with students from the University. You can be matched with other people based on your interests and hobbys!

2. Try volunteering

Volunteering can be a great way of spending your holiday away from home. Whether it’s helping out in a local charity shop, orphanage or care home, it will allow you to focus on a noble purpose! And what’s a better way to spend your Christmas? See if there are any opportunities in your local area and engage with them. This will also give you a chance to meet new people and make new friends to spend the rest of holiday with!

3. Head outside

Even if you don’t feel like going outside because it’s cold and dark, please don’t sit in your bedroom all day. Lincoln is a great town when it comes to various parks and green areas, so make the most out of your ‘me’ time and explore the city! Whether it’s just a short walk around your neighbourhood or a trip to the park, you can listen to your favourite podcasts or music while being outside which will boost your mood and you will come back to your flat with a fresh mind.

4. Try new things

What’s better time for redecorating your flat when you finally have the whole accommodation for yourself? 🙂 Also, Christmas time is perfect for trying all the recipes you’ve always wanted to do. Keep yourself busy and occupied which will help you enjoy your day and the feeling of loneliness will eventually fade away.

5. Pamper yourself!

Treat yourself with a gift, organise a pamper night or a self-care day when you take a break from all of your duties. You deserve something nice after all these months of hard work, especially during Christmas time, so why not become your own Santa!
