Valentine’s Day watch party

It is the time for chocolates, flowers and significant others. I have been searching the interweb for different films that you can watch online with your partner, in the living room with your best mate or alone in your room whilst having a self-love pamper session. Valentine’s Day should be spent in a way that makes you feel loved, however that may be!

In this blog post I will give you some ideas of different types of movies you could watch and where you can find them. At the end of the post there will also be some food and drink ideas for you to complete your evening with. Happy watching and Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us at Student Life!

Films – From Romantic Comedies to Sappy Classics

I love any sort of romantic film, book or vaguely any sort of story line that has an element of romance to it. If you are an all round lover of romance movies any of these will be for you, or if you have a specific genre that is your go to I’m hoping one of these sections below will be for you. I have split the films into three categories: Sobbing Sweethearts, Amusing Admirers and Classic Companions.  I will be including films that are on Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+ as the main streaming services but also know that you can rent movies very cheaply on YouTube, Google and Amazon.

Sobbing Sweethearts

For those who want to have a cry about love lost, love gained or the idea of love as a whole:

1. The Notebook (2004), Netflix – Their love story is infamous and I have never looked at birds the same ever again.
2. P.S I Love You (2007), Netflix & Amazon Prime – A widow reads the letters left by her late husband.
3. The Fault in Our Stars (2014), Available to Rent – I’m sure you know this but this is a sad movie.
4. Me Before You (2016), Available to Rent – Bumblebee tights are a way to any girl’s heart.
5. About Time (2013), Netflix, Amazon Prime, NowTV & SkyGo – Travelling through time can change a lot of things.
6. One Day (2011), Available to Rent – July 15th every year.
7. A Star is Born (2019), Amazon Prime – The struggle of love and art can leave you in the shallows.
8. A Walk to Remember (2002), Available to Buy – The ultimate ‘to-do’ list life.
9. Call Me By Your Name (2017), Available to Rent – All I can say is Timothee Chalamet.
10. Titanic (1997), SkyGo & NowTV – We all know how it ends. And that the door was big enough for the both of them.

Amusing Admirers

If you prefer to laugh your way through a romantic movies these are a bit more up your street:

1. Valentine’s Day (2010), NowTV – Follow different partners all throughout the 24 hour period of time that is Valentine’s Day.
2. The Proposal (2009), Amazon Prime – A fake proposal and a horrible boss.
3. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008), Netflix, Amazon Prime & NowTV – Can you ever really escape your ex?
4. Just Go With It (2011), Netflix & NowTV – Easily one of the best movies here. If you haven’t watched it you have to.
5. Silver Linings Playbook (2012), Available to Rent – Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Do I need to say more?
6. Shrek (2001), Amazon Prime, SkyGo & NowTV – Layers. It’s all about the layers.
7. Two Weeks Notice (2002), Amazon Prime – An assistant gives two weeks notice at work.
8. The Ugly Truth (2009), Netflix, SkyGo & NowTV – Can someone who is so obnoxious and a complete control freak figure out how to work together. Or will it just turn ugly?
9. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), Netflix & NowTV – Pretty self explainitary.
10. Bridget Jone’s Diary (2001), Netflix, SkyGo & NowTV – If you are here for the long run there are three movies…

Classic Companions

You think of romance and this comes on. The films that scream love in every language possible:

1. Love Actually (2003), SkyGo & NowTV – ‘To me, you are perfect.’
2. Ghost (1990), NowTV – Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg and Patrick Swayze. Need I say more?
3. Dirty Dancing (1987), Available to Rent – Nobody leaves baby in the corner.
4. Pride & Prejudice (2005), Netflix – For lovers of Bridgerton.
5. Casablanca (1942), Available to Rent – Morocco, December 1941. Two former lovers meet.
6. Romeo and Juliet (1996), Amazon Prime – A classic tragedy.
7. Moulin Rouge (2001), Available to Rent – A modern tragedy.
8. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), SkyGo & NowTV – Who is the right man?
9. Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Available to Rent – How long does it take to find love?
10. Pretty Woman (1990), Amazon Prime – It’s that red dress.

Snacks – For all or just for you

All movies need snacks, so why not make them fit the theme? You can of course just buy some or you can give these a go! Make sure to stay safe if you go out and buy some of the ingredients and make sure that everyone can eat what you are planning on making.

1. Valentine’s Brownies

There are so many recipes for brownies that you can try – if you want to use your family one go for it. I have just linked the one that I have found specifically for this post. You can pretty much add whatever you want to a brownie as well and they really don’t take long to bake at all. If you do end up making some make sure to take photos and tag us in them (@uolstudentlife on both Twitter and Instagram).

2. Heart Shaped Pizza

This is again so easy to adapt to whoever you are making it for. It’s also a nice little activity you could do as a couple, group of friends, housemate bonding or some alone time. Think of what you want on it and smell it cooking as the movie starts.

3. Pink Hot Chocolate

Of course, you could make any sort of hot chocolate. Much like your Valentine’s Day, we are making all of these things very adaptable. But to add a little bit of spice you could make a pink hot chocolate. It’s such a simple recipe and if the snow keeps on falling it is the perfect weather for it still. All it takes is white chocolate chips, milk, and red food colouring – simple.
