Valentines (or Galentines) is the perfect excuse to break out the tissues and get wrapped up in a cheesy romance movie, accompanied with chocolate, sweets and popcorn of course. This article will recommend you the soppiest and most heartwarming movies to add to this years Valentines day watchlist that’ll leave you hooked on romance.

Romeo and Juliet

When you think of a typical romance, ‘Romeo and Juliet‘ is often the first thing to come to mind, therefore it’s only right to add the 1996 classic Romeo and Juliet starring the classic heartthrob Leonardo Dicaprio to your watchlist this Valentines. This one is great if you love a star-crossed lover flic with a sad ending that’ll guarantee to make you shed a few tears.

If you’re unsure of the classic tale, this film places a modern twist on William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy of the same name. Two star-crossed teenagers fall in love, much to the dismay of their feuding families, Montague and Capulet, and the consequences unfold. The movie is also great if you’re interested in Shakespeare since it utilises Shakespearean English throughout whilst updating the setting and characters to appeal to a modern audience!

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

However, if you’re looking for something representing queer love and also adore a historical drama, ‘Portrait of a lady on fire’ is a fantastic choice. Set in 18th century France, it follows the story of a female artist commissioned to paint the wedding portrait of the young daughter of a French countess and showcases the growing mutual attraction between the two. The film’s message aims to show the ‘transformational power of love’ and is a real tear-jerker. This is a perfectly, underrated classic.

Mamma Mia

Not everyone wants a good cry on Valentine’s Day and ‘Mamma Mia‘ is the perfect singalong film to get you up and dancing. This cheesy romantic comedy incorporates all of the best Abba hits into a Greek island whirlwind romance that’ll get you grooving this Galentines day. The plot follows Sophie who on the cusp of her wedding invites her three possible fathers, without her movie Donna knowing. Chaos then ensues!

Crazy Rich Asians

Another comedy guaranteed to be a hit is ‘Crazy Rich Asians‘, this 2018 romantic comedy follows Rachel accompanying her boyfriend Nick to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. After finding out Nick is incredibly wealthy, she is thrust into the spotlight and must contend with his quirky relatives, jealous socialites and his disapproving mother. This all Asian cast delivers a fantastically funny film that’ll make sure you leave Valentines day with a smile no matter what.
