This year, Christmas Jumper Day falls on Thursday 8th December, and 2022 will mark the eleventh year that this lovely occasion has taken place. Every year people from all over the UK, from teachers to those working in hospitality, use this day to wear a Christmas jumper and help raise money for Save The Children, who organise and run the festive day. Since the day’s launch in 2012 the endeavour has raised over £30 million, and there are no plans on stopping.

If December 8th isn’t a day that works for you personally then that’s not a problem, as Save The Children say you can partake on any day that you want. The concept is perfectly simple – on the 8th, or your chosen day, just wear a Christmas jumper. It doesn’t have to be new or in impeccable condition, you can even get one from a charity shop if you want! They also encourage those getting involved to donate £2 to Save The Children – or if you’re partaking at school, a £1 donation would be hugely appreciated.

You don’t necessarily need to even be part of a group to get yourself involved, you can easily partake under your own steam! All that matters is that you’re wearing a festive jumper with pride – Save The Children encourages people to even set up their own pages for fundraising and sponsorship, so there’s plenty of ways for you to get involved – you can register your details of your participation here.

The charity has also created festive crafting kits to help people upcycle their jumpers at home; the kits are £3 and are available both in Save The Children charity shops, as well as online from their website: www.savethechildren.org.uk – here you will also find the free online fundraising pack the charity has put together. All profits from your purchases will go directly towards helping vulnerable children get the food, healthcare and education they need so they can access countless opportunities, and fulfil their dreams.

Fundraised money goes towards the following:

  • £5 could help a child in Rwanda expand their learning, providing them with a book written in their own language.
  • £18 could pay for a back-to-school kit for a child in Indonesia.
  • £50 could protect a child from problems caused by hunger – for example, providing a family who’ve fled violence in Yemen with enough food for a month.
  • £66 could buy two weeks’ worth of food for a family of five in Syria.
  • £70 could provide an LED lamp for a child to study by in Gaza, where there is only four hours of electricity available in a day.
  • £130 could help a child make a recovery from the most extreme forms of malnutrition, for example providing a child in Ethiopia with important medicine and therapeutic food.

Once you sign up to the event, you’ll be offered a text code which you can then share, so that any money you pay in is kept safe and secure. Each fundraiser are also at liberty to claim a JustGiving page which includes a QR code to help raise money safely, as well as a pay-in form on their website. Save The Children encourages everyone to use these findraising resources wherever possible, but if they don’t work for you/if you have other queries, you can contact the charity by phone at 0808 281 1031.

Something as simple as wearing a Christmas jumper may not seem significant to us, but it is truly a beautiful privilege. So this year consider wearing one, and help spread awareness of the incredible work that Save The Children do for those who truly need it the most!
