Nights out for non-drinkers

Who says you need alcohol to have a great time? Well, those often nursing mean hangovers after a night out. Although there’s nothing wrong with drinking, you can still have all the fun minus the inevitable headaches.

Lincoln does have a great nightlife, but it isn’t for everyone, so why not try something a little different? There are a wealth of other fun things to do in Lincoln for non-drinkers, which are usually cheaper alternatives too.

One of the more obvious options for an alcohol-free night would be the cinema. It’s always great to get the full popcorn and movie experience, especially when it’s a film you have been looking forward to seeing. There’s just something about a visit to the cinema that a night binging on Netflix doesn’t have. Lincoln has an Odeon multiplex cinema right in the middle of town on the Bradford Quay, so it’s easily accessible.

The cinema also offers special student discounts on tickets with NUS cards and other food and drink combos to give you more for your money. For an extra bonus, the Royal William restaurant next door will give 20% off food and drinks to any cinema ticket holders, just show them your stub. On average, a ticket will cost you around £8 plus treats, for a chill night out.

If you’re looking for a bit more of an active evening and an undeniably fun one, take a trip to the indoor play area. This has to be one of my favourite nights from my first year. Grab a group of your more immature friends and go down to Play Zone, located on Cross street, about a 15-minute walk west of The Engine Shed.

They hold exclusive student nights every Tuesday from 7:30pm, where you can let your inner kid out and run around a massive jungle gym. An absolutely hilarious time out and good exercise too for only £6 with a student ID.

For the braver ones among you, why not try Lincoln’s Original Ghost Walk, a tourist favourite due to the cities extensive and historical past. It runs Wednesdays to Saturdays from 7pm, meeting at the Cathedral square at the top of Steep Hill. You will be led by experienced guides around points of interest and attractions related to Lincoln’s dark past. It’s an interesting and thrilling evening out for those wanting to know more about the city of Lincoln. The tour lasts about 70 minutes and costs only £5 per person, definitely something for your to-do list.

Maybe similar to the cinema, but just as good of an evening, seeing a play, musical or even a poetry reading at Lincoln’s Performing Arts Centre – if a bit of artistic culture is what you want. A multitude of shows are always running year-round, so there is something for everyone, with a portion being created and performed by the University’s students.

Times and prices will vary for each performance but there are late shows available and an average ticket will be around £13 or cheaper if you pick yourself up a Live Pass from the box office.

These are just a few alternative ideas for non-drinkers to enjoy a memorable – and more likely cheaper- night out in Lincoln, failing this you and your mates could always pull out the Twister.
